Belly Button Biodiversity

Use the interactive charts below to explore the dataset

We have initiated the process for you. It is now time for you to embark on a journey of self-discovery, exploring your navel.
Please select your desired sample number from the drop-down menu. By hovering over the BAR and BUBBLE pieces, you can view the proportional abundance of a particular species.

  1. What species are present in your navel?
  2. What is the relative abundance of your common species?
  3. Do some species dominate more than others?
  4. Who are these species?
To gain further insight, we recommend exploring the profiles of common BB bacteria ⍈. Compare your results to the average ⍈ belly button diversity. Observe how distinct or similar your results are. Examine the charts of other participants to see which species you have in common. Consider the abundance of these common species in comparison to others. Reflect on potential factors that could influence these differences.

The average frequency of washing belly button scrubs per week, as determined through a study of 153 test subjects, was found to be 2.83 ( line), with a margin of error of 0.48 (- and + ).

The Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTU) ⍈ is considered as the fundamental unit employed in numerical taxonomy. These units may pertain to an organism, species, genus, or class. It is important to note that the taxonomic units utilized in numerical methods may not align with the formal taxonomic units. The belly button diversity bubble plot showcases all of the OTUs present in a sample, displaying their respective values.
